There was more deja vu the next morning when Harlow asked Noon to swing by the coffee shop to grab pastries and coffee before they went to Bale’s. Different apartment, different patient, but they’d held this kind of vigil before.

“I’m just saying the apartment was spotless before my arrest,” she said, leading the way up the stairs. “You guys can’t keep anything clean.”

“And I’m saying it pisses Maze off when we don’t pick up.”

“So, you do it on purpose? You do it to piss off Maze? Is that the excuse you’re trying to sell?”

Opening Bale’s front door, they went inside to find Ryske lying on the couch under the window on the opposite side of the room. He had a foot on the floor and an arm outstretched, hanging in midair like he’d just flopped down.

The closer they got, she noticed his eyes were closed and his lips slightly parted.

“What will we do with his coffee?” Noon asked.

It was a stupid impulse, but Harlow bent over to check the pulse in his neck. “Still alive.”

Noon slid the tray of coffees onto the end table. “You thought he wouldn’t be?” he asked, dropping into the armchair.

Almost every day when she woke up, there was a split second where she had to remind herself that Ryske was alive.

Harlow didn’t share that embarrassing truth. “Thought maybe Christmas had come early,” she said, putting the pastry bag on the table.

Leaving the men in the living room, she went into Bale’s bedroom. Anwen was asleep. Now that it was developed, the bruising told a stark tale of what the woman had endured. There were pain pills on the nightstand. For a moment, Harlow second-guessed leaving pills with a woman who’d overdosed, but quickly reminded herself that had been a con.

The swelling in Anwen’s face was bad, though probably not as bad as it would’ve been if they hadn’t got the ice packs on it. Bale was good. No. He was an excellent doctor. Still, Anwen would need considerable recovery time.

Bale’s work day started early; Harlow felt bad that they’d disrupted his night. The guy had no chance at a normal life when this kind of drama kept landing on his doorstep.

To her surprise, Harlow had slept well. That may have had something to do with the party atmosphere that accompanied the celebrations of her freedom. In Floyd’s, patrons and employees alike were happy to see her. The place had been crowded. Even though it was impossible, it almost felt like they’d planned a party for her. Afterwards, Harlow had crashed and woken up to Dover making coffee. Nothing beat waking up to that scent.

Recalling what Bale had said about infection, Harlow checked Anwen’s temperature. Everything looked good. Rest was important, so she left the sleeping patient alone to return to the living room.

Noon was searching around for something. “What did you lose?”

“Remote control.”

The small TV was on a stand next to the bedroom door. “Don’t put it on loud. Anwen needs to sleep.”

Noon kept on hunting.
